A popular myth says that the left eye of devi sati is supposed to have fallen here which has also given its name to the town 'nainital' were naina means 'the eye' and tal means 'the lake'. Here, the idol of Devi sati is hence worshipped as naina Devi at the naina Devi temple. Another myth says that the lake has been dug up by the three sages atri, pulatsya and pulaha who later brought water from the sacred lake of mansarovar and filled the lake giving its name as the 'tri rishi sarovar.
